Zverev is facing an Australian player at the Australian Open for the 2nd time, having previously defeated Alex Bolt in the 3rd round here in 2019. He is bidding to maintain a perfect record against players at their home Grand Slams, having also won all his matches against Americans at the US Open and Frenchmen at Roland Garros (and having never played a British player at Wimbledon). Millman ended a 5-match Grand Slam losing streak in the 1st round on Monday and is aiming to reach the 3rd round here for the 3rd time in his career. • Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini recorded a 4-set victory over Brandon Nakashima on Monday to begin his campaign for a first Grand Slam title here, with the Italian looking for a good run at this year’s tournament after withdrawing due to an abdominal injury in the round of 16 last year. Berrettini plays wild card Stefan Kozlov on John Cain Arena, a former boys’ singles runner-up here who is making strides towards the top of the professional game, having won 3 Challenger titles and improved his ranking by more than 200 places in 2021. The American recorded his first Tour-level victory on a hard court in the 1st round here and will aim for his first victory against a Top 10 player today. • Spanish No. 19 seed Pablo Carreno Busta faces Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the 2nd match on Kia Arena today, with Griekspoor bidding to extend an extraordinary winning run. Since falling to Novak Djokovic in the 2nd round at the US Open last year, Griekspoor has won all 29 matches he has contested – he won titles at 5 Challenger events from September to November and reached his first Tour-level quarterfinal at Melbourne this month before giving a walkover to Rafael Nadal. Another victory for Griekspoor today will see him advance to the 3rd round at a Grand Slam for the first time. • Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest man in the draw, cruised past qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in the first round on Monday but will face a tough challenge against Dusan Lajovic – ranked just 8 places below Alcaraz – in the 3rd match on 1573 Arena today. 18-year-old Alcaraz will become the youngest man to reach the 3rd round here since Bernard Tomic in 2011 if he wins today, but Lajovic has reached the 3rd round or better for the last 2 years and will be determined to prevent the teenager from advancing this afternoon. 2 2022 AUSTRALIAN OPEN DAY 3 MEN’S MATCH NOTES NO. 3 ALEXANDER ZVEREV (GER) v JOHN MILLMAN (AUS) Head-to-head: Zverev leads 2-0 2019 Roland Garros Clay (O) R128 Zverev 76(4) 63 26 67(5) 63 2020 Cologne II Hard (O) R16 Zverev 60 36 63 A 3rd meeting for Zverev and Millman and their 2nd at a Grand Slam. He won his only previous meeting with an Australian player here, defeating Alex Bolt in the 3rd round in 2019. He has a 16-5 win-loss record against Australian players at Tour-level overall. Zverev is bidding to maintain his perfect record against players at their home Grand Slams. In addition to his victory over Bolt here in 2019, he has a 4-0 win-loss record against Americans at the US Open and a 3-0 winloss record against Frenchmen at Roland Garros. He has lost Grand Slam matches to players ranked as low as Millman on 3 occasions – at Wimbledon in 2015 (when he fell to No. 105 Denis Kudla in the 2nd round), 2018 (when he fell to No. 138 Ernests Gulbis in the 3rd round) and 2019 (when he fell to No. 124 Jiri Vesely in the 1st round).
