The Canadian secured a memorable victory over Nadal as an 18-year-old at 2017 Montreal-1000, but he has since lost all 3 matches he has played against the 20-time Grand Slam champion. Should he record an upset victory today, he will reach his 2nd Grand Slam semifinal and become the 3rd Canadian player to reach the last 4 at the Australian Open, after Eugenie Bouchard in 2014 and Milos Raonic in 2016. A win for Nadal, meanwhile, will see the 35-yearold reach the last 4 here for the 7th time and become the 4th-oldest man to reach the Australian Open semifinals in the Open Era. • The 2nd quarterfinal at this year’s event is a repeat of a last 8 clash from the 2019 US Open, with Italy’s Matteo Berrettini up against France’s Gael Monfils. On that occasion, Berrettini recorded a memorable victory in a final-set tiebreak to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal – and another win tonight would see him become the first Italian man in history to reach the last 4 at the Australian Open. Monfils is through to just his 2nd Australian Open quarterfinal on his 17th appearance here, having also made the quarterfinals in 2016. Should he go one better this year, he will go top of the Open Era list for most attempts before reaching the Australian Open semifinals, as well as becoming the 8th Frenchman in the Open Era to reach the semifinals here
