Beijing 2022 : Day 6 Morning

Skeleton Comments from Team GB's Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt after the first two men's skeleton runs at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre. Weston is 13th with Wyatt in 17th ahead of the final two runs tomorrow. Matt Weston Age: 24 Hometown: Tunbridge Wells On the performance "I could probably look at it and look at about ten or 12 mistakes that I made and I'm really not happy. "But at the same time you've got to enjoy it. I'm really happy to be at the Olympics competing and representing my country. "I'm not happy, I'm hopefully going to go away tonight, look at the video review and come back even stronger tomorrow." On the track "This track is extremely punishing. Normally if you make a mistake on a track you might lose a couple of hundredths, maybe a tenth of a second. "You make a mistake here and it's like half a second here, half a second there, so it's really punishing. "But at the same time it's also really rewarding when you get it right because it 100 percent shows in your time." On turning it around tomorrow "Hopefully, if I have a run I'm satisfied with then I think I can jump up a few places. "All I'm hoping for is to keep improving. That second run was the fastest I've been down all week. "It's still not where I want to be but all I can ask for is that I’m putting down my best performances on race day." On difficulty "In one of the training runs, I hit my back. It's one of those ones that doesn't hurt but it's very difficult to get it right. "It's just a very, very fine margin for error. You have to do the correct skills and bring them out at exactly the right time otherwise you either hit the walls or you're off line. "There's very small gaps where you can actually get it right and shoot out. "It's definitely tricky, it's a really good track for challenging sliding which I actually really enjoy. I'm just hoping I can get it a bit more right tomorrow." Marcus Wyatt Age: 30 Hometown: Bristol On the performance "I was pretty happy with the run quality, two fairly consistent runs. They weren't the greatest I've ever done but not the worst. "I'm not going to lie and say I'm exactly where I wanted to be. We will go away this evening look at the data, analyse the video and hopefully we can bounce back and pick up a few spots tomorrow." On changes to track "We were last here in October. The general way tracks are maintained, putting the water onto the ice shape, it just changes over time. "Some of the corners are behaving a bit differently but we've had ten training runs to try and get to grips with that so it's not a big issue come race day." On being an Olympian now "That's really special. We've been here for a week and a half maybe two weeks and that hasn't quite sunk in, I think it will take some time. But it is literally a childhood dream. "Give me a few weeks and that will sink in and it's something I can be proud of forever." On striving for better "At the end of the day, I'm not happy. It could have been any kind of event today and if I'd come fourth I would have been annoyed - that's just who I am. "There's always that little part of it. At the end, if I walk away and I've put down four good runs then that's all you can really ask." Curling Comments from Team GB's Eve Muirhead after Team Muirhead, featuring Jennifer Dodds, Vicky Wright and Hailey Duff with Mili Smith as alternate, lost their first women's curling round robin match 6-5 to world champions Switzerland following an extra end. Eve Muirhead Age: 31 Hometown: Stirling On the performance "Not the result we wanted but we can take a lot of very good things from that game. "As much as it was a loss on the scoreboard, we can take a lot of things that keep us positive. "As a team I think we worked very, very well. All our communication and shot play was good but maybe we just didn't play the crucial shots at the right time. "Then of course, me missing that last draw is what wins and loses you games." On missing the draw to win in the extra end "I think I threw close to what I wanted to throw. It was up down, up down with the sweepers the whole way. "They are never easy to judge - those girls have to judge that to a penny. Unfortunately, today it just didn't come off. "But I'm sure if I ever shot like that again, I'm confident I would make it." On practice "I don't think we can blame not enough practice on the ice. Over the last few months, I've thrown a lot of stones. "It was the most time I've had off the ice since the summer break, but it was different prep to what we are used to going into events. But it's the same for the majority of players here. "We had a great practice yesterday and then we did have a good game today but unfortunately it just wasn't quite good enough at the end. "The mixed doubles event was going on so we couldn't practice. I wouldn't have had that much time off normally, we get weekends off and that's it." On hunger at fourth Games "There's a lot of hunger here. A fourth Olympic Games is something that you dream of coming to. "I'm very glad that I've got the opportunity to be here with four girls at their first Olympic Games. "I'm proud of them, how much they've come along and fought and they deserve their spot in the team. "They've helped me get here and I hope I've helped them get here as well. "So, really pleased with the first performance but we need to come out tonight and keep fighting against Sweden." On getting along off the ice "I think it's essential that we do get on off the ice as well and we do, we get on really well. "We know each other - I would say - inside out, we know what people like to do when they switch off. "And when we are on the ice as well, we know how to push each other's buttons to get the most out of each other. As a team we are very tight. "If I look back at my past Olympics, I've enjoyed playing with every team. "This team, we've come a long way from a squad system and now we are here at the Olympics and we've just got to keep fighting." On pacing themselves for another eight round robin games "It's essential that we take every game and every day at a time. Today is our only day with two games, so apart from today we can take every day as a different day. "I think we can take a lot of confidence going into tonight. We know games are going to come down to that last shot, that's just fact, unfortunately today it just didn't come off." On playing Sweden tonight "We do have a good record against Sweden but we know it’s not going to be easy, they are the current Olympic champions. "We had a very tight game against them in the Europeans and I know it's going to be tight tonight. "We've beat them before, so there's definitely no stopping us beating them again but at the Olympic Games it is a different kettle of fish out here. "But we know if we continue a lot of the great stuff we did this morning - it will be a great game." Snowboard Comments from Team GB's Huw Nightingale after he exited the men's snowboard cross in the 1/8 finals at his first Olympics. Nightingale will compete with Charlotte Bankes in the mixed team competition on Saturday. Huw Nightingale Age: 20 On the performance after finishing fourth in his 1/8 final with the top two progressing "It was not what I had planned, but sometimes it goes well and sometimes it goes not so well. "I was too far off the pack, they were drafting each other and I just couldn't get behind them." On whether he thought he could close the gap to his rivals "I was hoping, coming out of the jump section, I was getting a bit closer and thought maybe I could get close. "They just went again and there was nothing I could do really." On how he felt coming into the race "I was feeling very relaxed, to be honest. I came here with nothing to lose - I'm not fighting for the title. "I've just got to give my all and have fun here." On making his Olympic debut "Hopefully for the next Games, I'll go and I've already got one under my belt and I can prepare myself a lot better for the next one." On how he's feeling ahead of the team event with Charlotte Bankes "Pretty positive. We're both going to take it very relaxed and very chilled and hopefully we can do a lot better than the last days." On the course "It's brilliant. Compared to all the races this season, it's the best course we've had so far. Probably a couple of the biggest jumps but it's all fine."
