DANIIL'S DEFIANCE
You can’t win ‘em all, but Daniil Medvedev knows things can change fast on the ATP Tour. “The good thing about tennis is that in one week you can turn around your season,” said the World No. 1 after powering past Cameron Norrie at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel in Los Cabos to capture his first title of 2022. Medvedev will now look to maintain that title-winning feeling in Montreal at this week's National Bank Open Presented by Rogers. The top seed is defending his ATP Masters 1000 crown won in Toronto in 2021, but he could face another man in a rich vein of form, Nick Kyrgios, in the second round. Kyrgios backed up his run to the Wimbledon final in June in style at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., becoming the first man to sweep the singles and doubles titles in the tournament's 53-year history. “I think you have a small window after a Grand Slam that people kind of fear you before they step out on the court,” said the Australian. “I feel like I made the most of it this week." As well as a shot at a prestigious Masters 1000 crown, Montreal also offers plenty of all-important points as the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin heats up. Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner are among those seeking a big week in Canada as they try to barge into qualifying contention for November’s Nitto ATP Finals.
