Mahuchikh sparkles on golden night

 “I came to Rome to defend my title and become the double European champion and that is what I managed tonight.”

It was been a special night for Ukraine, with high jump superstar Yaroslava Mahuchikh taking gold, sharing the podium with team-mate Iryna Gershchenko taking bronze. Mykhaylo Kokhan’s bronze medal in the men’s hammer throw completed a fantastic night in Stadio Olympico for the nation.

The day had started off with an Italian double victory for Yemaneberhan Crippa and Pietro Riva in the men’s half marathon, followed by Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal bringing it home for Norway on the women’s side.

Highlighting the night session was Dina Asher-Smith, regaining her European women’s 100m title and Ciara Mageean, winning Ireland’s second gold of the championships in the women’s 1500m final.

Other gold medalists include France’s Gabriel Tual (800m), Alice Finot (3000mSC), Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki (hammer throw), and Spain’s Ana Peleteiro-Compaore (triple jump).
