Paris 2024: Day nine preview

Day nine will see Dame Sarah Storey return to action while para canoeing gets underway at Vaires-sur-Marne.

Here’s a look at ParalympicsGB’s medal hopes across the day (all times CET).

Para cycling (road)

Dame Sarah Storey will return to the Clichy-sous-bois course tomorrow in search of a 19th Paralympic gold medal as she competes in the women’s C4-5 road race. Her third consecutive title defence will start at 09:35.

The women’s tandems will race later at 13:30 in the women’s B road race. Sophie Unwin, piloted by Jenny Holl, will hope to better her Tokyo silver and win her second gold of the Games. She will be joined by Lizzi Jordan, piloted by Danielle Khan, and Lora Fachie, piloted by Corinne Hall, who will also be looking to add to their medal hauls.

Stephen Bate, piloted by Chris Latham, are hoping for a change in fortunes in this event after crashing out in Tokyo. They start at 13:00 in the men’s B road race.

In the Men’s C4-5 race at 09:30, Archie Atkinson and Blaine Hunt will ride for ParalympicsGB.

Wheelchair tennis

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid will play in their third Paralympic final at Roland-Garros on Friday as they compete for a first men’s doubles gold.

They will play Japanese pair Takuya Miki and Tokita Oda at 13:30 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Para athletics

Tokyo gold and Rio silver medallist Jonathan Broom-Edwards will compete in the men’s T64 high jump at 11:48 as he hopes to add another medal to his collection.

He will be joined in the Stade de France by world champion Ben Sandilands, who is competing in the men’s T20 1500m final at 11:01.

Sandilands will be followed on the track by Hannah Taunton, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, in the women’s event at 11:09.

Hollie Arnold, who won gold in Rio and bronze in Tokyo, will compete in the women’s F46 javelin final at 19:18.

The universal 4x100m relay will be decided tomorrow with qualifying at 12:50 and the final at 20:42. The ParalympicsGB team won silver three-years-ago.

Should Marcus Perrineau-Daley make it through qualifying in this evening’s men’s T52 100m, he will run in the final at 11:33.

Isaac Towers and Ali Smith will both be competing in their qualifying rounds. Towers takes to the track at 12:10 in the men’s T34 800m, and Smith will race later at 21:25 in the women’s T38 400m.

Para swimming

Maisie Summers-Newton, who has two golds under her belt so far, will compete in her final event of Paris 2024, the Women’s S6 400m freestyle, at 17:41.

In the men’s S14 100m backstroke, Mark Tompsett, William Ellard and Louis Lawlor will be taking to the pool, with qualifying at 10:34 and the final at 19:04.

In the women’s event, Poppy Maskil, Olivia Newman-Baronius and Megan Neave will compete shortly afterwards with qualifying at 10:45, and the final at 19:10.

Para equestrian

In the team event, ParalympicsGB will be represented by Paris 2024 bronze medallists Sophie Wells, Georgia Wilson and Natasha Baker, who have all won individual bronze medals in Paris. Baker and Wells were both in the gold medal winning team in Tokyo in the same event.

Wells will be first to compete in the Grade V classification at 12:13, followed by Wilson in the Grade II classification at 14:50 and Baker in the Grade III classification at 16:03.

Para table tennis

There will be two table tennis medals decided for ParalympicsGB as Rio champion Rob Davies plays in the gold medal match of the men’s singles MS1 against Cuba’s Yunier Fernandez at 14:00.

Will Bayley will also be in action as he plays in the semi-final of the men’s singles MS7 against Jean Paul Montanus of the Netherlands at 10:00. The final is at 19:15.

Wheelchair fencing

All three men on the ParalympicsGB wheelchair fencing team will enter tomorrow’s competition as Paris 2024 medallists.

Dimitri Coutya, Piers Gilliver and Oliver Lam Watson will return to the Grand Palais tomorrow in the men’s epée competitions from 09:40.

Gilliver won silver in the category A competition in Rio and gold in Tokyo, and Coutya won bronze in category B three-years-ago.

Gemma Collis will compete in her second event of her fourth Paralympic Games tomorrow as she enters the Women’s Épée Category A competition at the table of 16.

Powerlifting

Matt Harding will make his Paralympic debut in the Men’s -80kg competition at 18:35.

The 25-year-old from the Wirral won the 2022 European title in the 72kg class..  

Para canoe

It is the first day of the para canoe on Friday and all nine ParalympicsGB athletes will be competing in their heats ahead of finals on Saturday and Sunday. Five of the squad are competing in a second Paralympic sport.

ParalympicsGB won seven medals in Tokyo 2020, and many of that squad will return to the water at Vaires-sur-Mairne, including reigning champions Emma Wiggs, Laura Sugar and Charlotte Henshaw. The first race is at 10:10.
