Paris 2024: Day Three Preview



A packed Saturday in Paris will see 49 gold medals handed out, with ParalympicsGB athletes at the heart of the action.


Here’s a look at what to look forward to…



Para Swimming


Poppy Maskill bids for a second gold medal of the Games as she targets women’s S14 200m freestyle glory. 


The 19-year-old, who already has a S14 100m butterfly gold in Paris, will be joined in qualifying at 9:56 by European silver medallist Olivia Newman-Baronius and world bronze medallist Louise Fiddes ahead of the final at 17:51.


Two-time world champion and Rio bronze medallist Alice Tai is targeting Paralympic gold as she goes in the women’s S8 100m backstroke. 


The 25-year-old goes in the qualification round at 10:18 ahead of the final at 18:06.


William Ellard, who won Paralympics GB’s first medal in the pool with a silver in the men's S14 100m butterfly, will look to add to that as he competes in the men’s S14 200m freestyle.


It is arguably Ellard’s strongest event, as he has a world silver and European gold alongside equalling the world record.


He will be joined in qualifying by Cameron Vearncombe, who was eighth in the men’s S14 100m butterfly, at 9:46, ahead of the final at 17:44.


Stephen Clegg is hoping to reach the top step in the men’s 100m S12 backstroke tomorrow. 


Clegg, who has won two world titles in this event since securing bronze in Tokyo, will go in qualifying at 9:30 ahead of the final at 17:30.


European gold medallist Iona Winnifrith is competing in the women’s SM7 200m individual medley qualifying at 11:26, with the 13-year-old hoping to medal in the final at 20:10.


And Scarlett Humphrey competes in the women’s S11 50m freestyle with qualifying at 11:46 and the final at 20:41.



Para Cycling


Jaco van Gass is hoping to complete a track cycling double as he goes for gold in the men’s C1-3 1000m time trial. 


Van Gass, who won gold in the men’s pursuit today, goes in qualifying at 10:19. 


The final for the event, in which van Gass picked up a bronze in at Tokyo, is at 14:02.


Following his silver in the men’s C4-5 1000m time trial, Blaine Hunt will go for gold in the C5 4000m pursuit on Saturday.


Qualifying will take place at 11:58, with the bronze final at 15:10 ahead of the gold medal final at 15:21. 


Teammate Archie Atkinson, who was fifth in the C4-5 1000m time trial, is going in the C4 4000m pursuit, with qualifying at 11:01 and the gold medal final at 15:01.


World silver medallist Fran Brown is hoping to go one better in the women’s C1-3 500m time trial.


Qualifying for the event is at 10:00, ahead of the final at 13:35. 



Para Athletics


Sprinters take centre stage on Saturday evening with several 100m finals taking place.


Two-time Paralympic champion Sophie Hahn runs in the women’s T38 100m heats at 11:51, with the final taking place at 20:11. The 27-year-old topped the podium in Rio and Tokyo and now bids to complete a remarkable hat-trick. She is joined by compatriots Maddie Down, 16, and team captain Olivia Breen, who is also competing in the long jump in Paris.


Joining Hahn in defending a title is Thomas Young, who is aiming to retain his men’s T38 100m crown at 19:25 while Zac Shaw, who has won bronze at each of the last two World Championships, lines up in the men’s T12 100m final at 21:07.


There are medals up for grabs in the morning at the Stade de France, with Eden Rainbow-Cooper in the T54 women’s 5000m final and Luke Nuttall taking part in the T46 men’s 1500m showpiece.



Para Archery 


There are three para archers going for gold for Paralympics GB on Saturday, as the women’s individual W1 and compound open competitions reach their conclusion. 


Victoria Kingstone, who was sixth in her W1 ranking round, faces Brazil’s Juliana Cristina Ferreira da Silva at 9:34 in the ⅛ round, with the quarter and semi-finals following ahead of the gold medal match taking place at 12:05.


Following that, Jodie Grinham and Phoebe Paterson Pine will go in their ⅛ finals in the compound, ahead of the gold medal match at 20:00.


Grinham, who is seven months pregnant and qualified in fourth, faces Kseniya Markitantova of Poland at 16:04, while Paterson Pine, who ranked seventh and defeated Ecuador’s Diana Gonzabay Guaman 142-141, faces Melissa-Anne Tanner of Australia at 16:38.



Para Taekwondo


Amy Truesdale is looking to add to her international medal haul as she competes in the women’s K44 +65kg. 


Truesdale, who secured a bronze at Tokyo and is a three-time world champion and four-time European champion, opens her campaign at 14:22 in the quarter-final stage ahead of the gold medal bout is at 20:48.


In the men’s K44 +80kg, two-time world champion Matt Bush rounds off Paralympics GB’s taekwondo campaign as he targets a spot in the gold medal bout at 21:02. 


Bush, who missed Tokyo through injury, gets his campaign underway at the quarter-final stage at 13:27. 


Elsewhere, GB’s wheelchair rugby squad take on host nation France at 19:30, while both the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams face Canada in group matches.


Group stages also continue in boccia, with reigning champion David Smith continuing his campaign against Daniel Perez in the men’s BC1 pool stage at 12:50, and badminton.
