The British Olympic Association (BOA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Vice Chair, Annamarie Phelps, to the European Olympic Committee’s (EOC) Executive Committee.
Phelps was selected amongst 11 other members, including five other women, to join the EOC’s ExCo. Speaking after confirmation of the result, Phelps, said: “I am delighted to be have been so strongly supported by the European NOCs to contribute to the work of the European Olympic Committees over the next four years.
“We clearly face an exciting and challenging period as the continent emerges from the pandemic and I believe the EOC’s new strategy and work to promote the Olympic Values will be a valuable contribution to the health and sustainability of Olympic sport across Europe, as well as globally.”
It came on the same day as Greece’s Spyros Capralos was elected President of the EOC after defeating acting head Niels Nygaard at the organisation’s in-person General Assembly in Athens.
A total of 46 National Olympic Committees were present in Greece and another four joined remotely, with Capralos securing 34 votes ahead of Nygaard with 16.
Further recognition for British Olympic sport came when exciting freestyle skier, Kirsty Muir, made the final shortlist for the 6th Piotr Nurowski award, which recognises Europe’s best young summer and winter athletes.
Muir shot to the attention of the world as she won silver at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games, as well as a number of very impressive performances since then.
She was ultimately beaten on the day by Slovenian biathlete, Lena Repinc, who had a successful year winning four medals at the IBU Youth/Junior Championships before making her senior debut at the Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka, Slovenia.
