Tennis: Alcaraz's Big Breakthrough
At just 18 years, 11 months and 20 days old, Carlos Alcaraz has joined the tennis elite. After winning the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, the Spaniard is into the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time at World No. 9.
"I don't have any limits. I want to keep playing at the level I'm at and I think that if I keep going like this I have a lot of options to keep going up," Alcaraz said. "I want to keep enjoying myself on the court, I don't want to touch the ceiling yet."
Alcaraz is the youngest player to break into the Top 10 since Rafael Nadal (18y, 10m, 22d) in 2005. Alcaraz and Nadal both made their breakthrough into the elite group on the same date — 25 April — after winning the Barcelona title.
The pupil of former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero is just the 20th teen to crack the Top 10 since the inception of the ATP Rankings in 1973. Only eight have accomplished the feat at a younger age.
Alcaraz arrived in Barcelona last year at World No. 119 and without a tour-level final on his record. After triumphing at home on Sunday, he is a four-time ATP Tour titlist.
