THE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 HITS NEW HEIGHTS INONLINE AND DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT



London, UK, Friday 15 July 2022: Back at full capacity for the first time since 2019, The Championships 2022 delivered record digital and streaming audiences alongside strong television audiences worldwide. Coverage of this year's Wimbledon set a new record for online viewing figures, with 53.8m streams on BBC iPlayer and online, beating the previous high of 30.5m in 2021. A total of 25.5m people watched on BBC television as British No.1 Cameron Norrie reached his first Grand Slam semi-final before losing to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The volume of hours consumed by television viewers was also the highest since The Championships 2016, when former British No.1 Andy Murray won his second Wimbledon title. US audiences also reported strong engagement through broadcast partner ESPN, with the Ladies’ Singles Final averaging 1.2m viewers (peaking at 1.7m viewers at the end of the match), while the Gentlemen’s Singles Final averaged 2.2m viewers (peaking at 3.3m viewers in the final games of the match), a 22% increase on last year’s Final. Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS) televised every match of The Championships across all 18 courts including Centre Court in 4K High Dynamic Range.

The best performing content across the Fortnight included the focal point of our Centre Court centenary celebrations on Middle Sunday where Roger Federer’s return and reunion with Rafael Nadal, among others, drove a major spike in engagements, including more than 10 million views of this Instagram reel. Wimbledon’s Instagram account reached an incredible 82m total accounts across The Championships. Demand for Wimbledon merchandise far surpassed previous records, with almost half a million items sold across the Fortnight. This included more than 50,000 towels and more than 20,000 used tennis balls. Guest demand for strawberries reached new heights with 50 tonnes (well over 2m strawberries) consumed. This is up 50% on the previous record year, 2019, with prices held at 2010 levels of £2.50 a portion. Attendance, meanwhile, was the highest in Wimbledon history, with 515,164 guests attending during the Fortnight as a result of a full 14-day schedule. Middle Sunday marked the celebration of 100 years of Centre Court and saw more than 15,000 tickets reserved for the local community to purchase, with thousands of tickets donated to refugees from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria who are settled in the boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth, as well as charities, schools and community groups.   • Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS) televised every match of The Championships across all 18 courts including Centre Court in 4K High Dynamic Range.

  • An international line up of 27 commentators and 23 court directors delivered more than 700 matches to a global audience.

  • WBS deployed more than 150 cameras across the Grounds, which included 118 match cameras and 21 beauty cameras.

  • WBS serviced more than 50 media rights holders on-site during The Championships including TV Broadcasters, Radio & News Access, covering over 200 territories worldwide.

  • 18 studios, 22 stand-up positions and several satellite exterior studios around the Grounds gave the broadcasters the opportunity to showcase The Championships.

  • The Middle Sunday saw a standalone production by WBS to celebrate the centenary of Centre Court including a parade of 26 former Wimbledon Champions, live musical performances and magical moments relived through the archive.

Digital & Social Media Stats

  • There was an 18% increase in unique audience consumption on owned and operated channels vs 2021.

  • 21.1m unique devices recorded on wimbledon.com and the mobile apps (46% up on 2021).

  • A 37% increase in visits to wimbledon.com and the mobile apps.

  • 499,000 new registrations to myWimbledon during the six weeks of the grass court season; 353,000 during the Fortnight.

  • Wimbledon’s operated social media platforms added 1.02m social followers since the start of the grass court swing - only the second time The Championships has exceeded 1m in growth during that timeframe.

  • Wimbledon’s total audience size now stands at 15.6m social followers, remaining the biggest Grand Slam by social following in total and on each platform (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube).

  • The Championships were more engaging than ever on social platforms: up 4% vs 2021’s record high.

  • Wimbledon’s YouTube channel engaged a record 44.7m unique viewers since the start of the grass court swing: +186.9% vs 2021, and +70.6% vs 2019.

  • There was an 18% increase in unique audience consumption on owned and operated channels vs 2021.

  • Across The Championships, in all events including the Qualifying Competition, 142,448 points were contested, during 23,148 games, with 927 matches played.

  • The 100th ace served on Centre Court this Championships was by Andy Murray in his match against John Isner.

  • John Isner hit his 13,729th ace during Wimbledon against Jannik Sinner, breaking the all-time ATP record for career aces and seizing the record from Croatian Ivo Karlovic.

  • There were 22 left-handers competing in the Gentlemen’s Singles this year - the most left-handers to compete in the Gentlemen’s Singles at Wimbledon since 1997 when there were 26.

  • Liam Broady lost 11 games in a row against Diego Schwartzman and yet still managed to win the match - this has only ever happened twice since IBM records began.

  • Elena Rybakina served 53 aces at this year’s Championships - the most of all competitors in the Ladies' Singles.

  • The longest rally in the Gentlemen’s Singles was 40 shots long, in the second round, between Tommy Paul and Adrian Mannarino. This ranks joint third for the longest rallies in Gentlemen’s Singles at Wimbledon since IBM records began.

Retail During The Championships, more than 166,640 retail transactions took place in the Wimbledon Shops and Kiosks, including:

  • 450,670 items sold

  • 54,156 towelling products

  • 77,483 apparel products

  • 20,358 used balls

Royal Attendance HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, attended The Championships on three occasions: Tuesday 5, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July. The Duchess was joined by HRH The Duke of Cambridge on Tuesday 5 and Sunday 10 July. HRH Prince George of Cambridge attended his first Championships on Sunday 10 July. The Hill in New York

  • For the first time, Wimbledon brought an authentic physical experience of The Championships to another territory.

  • The activation saw 6,000 attendees visit over the last three days of The Championships in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

  • The Grounds of SW19 were recreated to offer US and New York citizens a flavour of the on-site Wimbledon experience.

  • The event also offered Wimbledon Partners the opportunity to activate and extend the Wimbledon story in other territories.

  • ESPN supported via broadcast whilst American Express, Babolat, HSBC, Sipsmith, IBM and Ralph Lauren all aided in elevating and promoting the experience for attendees.

Wimbledon Foundation Ticket Resale for charity £234,000 – money raised from the Ticket Resale scheme, whereby Show Court tickets no longer required are re-sold to spectators already in the Grounds. £404,000 – funds donated to the Wimbledon Foundation after official partner HSBC donated £170,000. Proceeds distributed to local causes and military and emergency service charities through the Wimbledon Foundation. Coin Toss This year, the Wimbledon Foundation invited residents of Merton and Wandsworth to nominate inspirational young people who had gone above and beyond to care for their friends, family and communities during the pandemic.

  • Ladies' Singles Final - performed by Gabia Sakaviciute, aged 13, who was nominated by Jigsaw4u, a local children's charity which supports children and young people through trauma, loss and bereavement.

  • Gentlemen’s Singles Final - performed by Dylan Mulvey, aged 13, who was nominated by St George’s Hospital Charity, in recognition of his fundraising efforts for the hospital.

  • Two bespoke platinum coins were created for this year’s Finals by the World Platinum Investment Council to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the Centre Court centenary.
