With just one month to go until the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Team GB and presenting partner Toyota are excited to launch I Am Team GB.
The ‘Festival of Sport’ will harness the incredible stories of Team GB athletes in Tokyo to inspire men and women, boys and girls across the UK to ‘Get Up and Get Active’ at free and fun events held around the country across the weekend of August 14 and 15.
These include free hero events at the Olympic Stadium in London, the Stadium of Light in Sunderland and the University of Hull. There will also be a family fun day at Paulton Park, the home of Team GB’s newest recruit Peppa Pig. You can sign up to all these events at www.IAmTeamGB.com.
Launching today, on Olympic Day, I Am Team GB is already a much-loved and successful mass participation event, having seen over one million people in the UK take part after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and also welcome home the country’s history making athletes at their local sports clubs and community events.
With a taste of what’s to come on August 14/15, the University of Hull Sports Union will today put on a variety of Olympic and non-Olympic themed sports for people to try out, which Team GB Olympian and London 2012 bronze medallist, Beth Tweddle, will be on hand to watch and throw her support behind.
There are plenty of ways to get involved in this summer’s iteration of I Am Team GB’s 'Festival of Sport', with Olympic sport taster sessions run by local sports clubs, as well as local leisure centres throwing open their doors to host ‘have a go’ activities. It’s easier than ever to get up and get active with I Am Team GB.
Alternatively, there’s the option to Create Your Own Activity and take part on a day and in a way that totally suits you – such as in your back garden or local park with family, friends or the wider community. Your activity can be public or private, so it couldn’t be easier to get up and get active in the best way that suits you.
Whichever option you choose, there are plenty of resources and chances to get your hands on I Am Team GB kit, to stay connected and inspired by Team GB and an opportunity to meet some of the inspiring athletes who have wowed us all in Tokyo this summer.
Speaking ahead of the launch event at the University of Hull, Team GB Olympian, Beth Tweddle, said: “I am delighted to be attending the University of Hull today to support the launch of I Am Team GB. Given what’s happened in the last year and a half it will be amazing to see so many people getting up and active and having a good time together.
“I Am Team GB represents a great opportunity for me, as a Team GB Olympian, to give back to the community that has done so much to support me on my journey as an athlete, and hopefully play a role in inspiring more people to get active, play Olympic sport and live healthier lifestyles.”
Team GB Commercial Director, Tim Ellerton, added: “We are really excited to be launching I Am Team GB today. With the support of our presenting partner Toyota, we are creating a host of free events up and down the country for those inspired by the Olympics to get up and active this summer, with a festival of sport on August 14 and 15.”
Tom Whiteside, Sponsorship Manager for Toyota said: “Toyota is all about promoting mobility, so to activate our sponsorship of Team GB we wanted to create something in partnership that enabled us to take the magic of the Olympics and inspire people to get up and get active, irrespective of age, experience or skill level and I Am Team GB gives us the perfect opportunity for us to do just that and we have more exciting activations to announce over the course of the campaign.”
